Shiraito Falls is a very long waterfall!

Shiraito-no-taki: A Waterfall of White Threads

Shiraito-no-taki (白糸の滝), or Shiraito Falls, is my third waterfall on the list of 100 famous waterfalls in Japan. After visiting, I can say it deserves its spot on that ranking! The name translates into ‘white threads waterfall’ for the many thin streams of water that tumble over the cliff. The water for this waterfall is actually spring water from Mt. Fuji!

Shiraito-no-taki

One thing I love about waterfalls is they’re always super photogenic, and this one was no exception! After following the path down through touristy shops, I came to an area neatly prepared for tourists. While I don’t usually appreciate concrete and fences, I did in this instance; they allowed people to get close enough to take pictures without destroying the scenic nature of the area in the process. It also wasn’t too busy when I went, so I had plenty of time to experiment with my camera.

One thing that surprised me about this waterfall was that the plants around it were still green! Coming from snow-covered Nagano, it was quite a nice change of scenery. Another thing that surprised me was how wide it is. I’m used to waterfalls being one long rush of water, whereas this one is multiple small threads.

Mt. Fuji and the Falls

If you follow the path to the end of the waterfall area, then follow the stairs up to the left, you’ll come out to another viewing platform. This one’ll let you take a picture of Shiraito Falls with Mt. Fuji in the background! I didn’t know about this spot before I came, and I almost missed it. If the weather is nice, make sure you get a picture!
